This course provides practical knowledge and skills in dysphagia, choking prevention and safe swallowing in aged care. You will explore the types, causes, signs and potential complications of dysphagia, learn to identify residents at increased risk of choking, aspiration, malnutrition and dehydration, and understand the healthcare worker’s role in safe swallowing practices, reporting and referral. The course also introduces the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework for identifying appropriate food textures and fluid consistencies. You will learn to recognise partial and complete airway obstruction and provide appropriate first aid for an adult who is choking. CPD Hours: 1
